The 9th Khon Kaen International Marathon runners enjoy another great success



On January 29, at the Golden Jubilee Convention Center, KKU, Khon Kaen provincial authorities, KKU, public and private sectors’ representatives, major sponsors and guests of honor jointly organized the 9th Khon Kaen International Marathon opening event.

Sombat Triwatsuwan, the governor of Khon Kaen province- who also presided over the opening ceremony said the 9th Khon Kaen International Marathon is held annually with the aiming of promoting this grand event to be as one of the Khon Kaen University and Khon Kaen province’s traditional sports, as well as encouraging exercise and good health among Thai people, so that they could raise their quality of life for the better status which is an important foundation for the country development.

The Khon Kaen International Marathon reflects the harmony found throughout Khon Kaen province in this international event, he added.

Khon Kaen residents and the organizing committee have, therefore, invited runners as one of the main strengths of this marathon is that it serves as a great practice stage for local runners to gain marathon experience at an international level, and get in touch with the world-class runners at one of the biggest marathon event held in Thailand.

Meanwhile, Aphitsit Rujikiartkamjorn, the organizing committee chairman also reported that the 9th Khon Kaen International Marathon was divided into four categories like before such as, 42.195 kilometers long marathon, 21.10 kilometers half - marathon, 11.55 kilometers mini-marathon and 4.5 kilometers jogging for health.

RESULTS
 
1.  Daniel Omori Gekara from Kenya was the winner of the overall men’s marathon with a record time of 2hours 23 minutes and 18 seconds.  He was awarded 200,000 baht and a trophy from His Majesty the King.

Meanwhile, his Kenyan compatriot Kiplimo Jackline was the winner of the women’s marathon with a record time of 2:51:22, also earning her 200,000 baht and a trophy from His Majesty the King.  

2.  Daniel Kiarie Gachui from Kenya won the men’s half marathon in 1:07:28, and received a trophy from Her Majesty the Queen to go with his 50,000 baht prize money, while Alice Kabura Njoroge also from Kenya won the women’s half marathon with a time of 1:19:54.  She also received a trophy from Her Majesty the Queen along with the sum of 50,000 baht.

3.  The most popular category was the mini marathon.   Simion Kipkorir Ruto from Kenya won the men’s category while Thailand’s Sonthiya Saiwaew, won the women’s category.   Mr. Simion came home in a time of 36:50 and Ms. Sonthiya finished in 44:05.   Both were handed 20,000 baht and a trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.   

4.  The last category was the 4 .5 kilometer ‘fun run’ for health, which was participated by about 38,000 people.
 
The 9th Khon Kaen International Marathon runners enjoyed another great success this year as more than 47,000 athletes took part.  It is regarded as one of Thailand’s largest marathons and now in its ninth year, and then the next 2013 event, as the tenth marathon will be taken place on 27 January, 2013 in Khon Kaen.

In addition, the major sponsorships of the event were such as the PPT Group (public) Co., Ltd., the office of Thai Health Promotion Foundation, the MIZUNO, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. ICC International Co., Ltd. (Public), Bank of Ayudhya (Public) Company Limited, and others which also gave fully supported of the marathon.
